Tis the season to be sewing!!! . . . UTA is excited to begin our annual senior care holiday projects in which we make hand-crafted, and machine sewn gifts for residents of local nursing homes and rehabilitation centers. It is a special time of the year that we set aside to help spread holiday cheer to residents who are shut-in, often with infrequent visits from family and friends. Our heart-felt gifts and cards are simple gestures of kindness to express to the recipients that they are not alone and are remembered during this season of giving. In turn, the bright smiles that illuminate the face of each recipient immensely reward our staff and volunteers.

Will you join us for this rewarding experience! This year, we will be making fidget quilts and pillows per the following workshops, which are free to anyone willing to donate their time to benefit others:

WORKSHOPS

FIDGET QUILTS & PILLOWS (Ages 8 and up)

Fidget Quilts (sensory blankets) are lap blankets covered with embellishments and are great for people experiencing Alzheimer’s, dementia, and/or memory loss. Fidget Pillows (sensory cushions) serve the same purpose. The most rewarding benefit of these beautiful keepsake gifts is that recipients can use their hands to alleviate agitation. The constant touching of the garnishments helps to stimulate and maintain fine motor skills.

Class Schedule: Tuesdays & Thursdays (11:00 AM – 1:00 PM) Workshop Fee: FREE

COURSE INSTRUCTIONS

• Workshop Supplies: UTA will provide a selected supply of fabric and sewing notions.

• Participant Requirements: Bring your sewing machine, thread, and other sewing notions. UTA has a limited number of machines available for use (first come-first served).

• Donation Request: Any donations of supplies ( fabric scraps, zippers, large buttons, snaps, ribbons, plastic beads, etc.) will be most appreciated.

• Optional: In addition to helping with the outreach project, participants will have an opportunity to make a personal pillow if desired.
